Prof Catts is a research psychiatrist.


His work led to the discovery in schizophrenia of an abnormality in auditory sensory memory referred to as Mismatch Negativity (MMN).

Prof Catts chaired the NSW Early Psychosis (EP) Research and Evaluation (R&E) Committee; and was formative in the Queensland State-wide EP subgroup and R&E Working Party.

Prof Catts led the NHMRC Clinical Practice Improvement Network for Early Psychosis to evaluate EP intervention in a prospective epidemiological cohort.

Another focus of Prof Catts’ work has been clinical trials of antipsychotic drugs. He also played a leading role in the establishment of the Schizophrenia Research Institute (formerly NISAD) and he was foundation Director of the Schizophrenia Research Unit at Liverpool Hospital, NSW.

He is currently a co-chief investigator on the NHMRC-funded Australian Schizophrenia Research Bank.

At NeuRA he is working with Dr Weickert in providing clinical trial research studies for people with schizophrenia in Sydney.
