Mechanisms of neurodegeneration in Motor Neurone Disease

Motor Neurone Disease is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease which is universally fatal. The disease is characterised by the progressive weakness of voluntary muscles through out the body. As the degeneration and eventual loss of motor neurones within the brain and spinal cord progresses the muscles atrophy causing weakness and eventually paralysis. The mechanism which cell death occurs is complex and likely to be multifocal. The aim of this project is to gain a greater understanding of how cell death is triggered and progresses in motor neurone disease with the main goal of finding a means to prevent it occurring.
