Site of origin of Motor Neurone Disease

MND is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterised by the progressive muscular paralysis caused by the deterioration of motor neurones. Currently the site of onset of motor neurone disease is unknown, whether it be the brain, spinal cord or peripheral nerve. This lack of knowledge has implications for the application of potential therapies that maybe available in the future. To clarify the location of disease onset this project utilises various techniques including novel threshold tracking transcranial magnetic stimulation, diffusion tensor imaging, volumetric MRI and sodium coil imaging, along with Bayesian MUNE techniques and quantitative EMG.
