Funding for motor neurone disease research announced

NeuRA researchers have secured funding for motor neurone disease research from the MND Australia in a record-breaking funding announcement made recently.

The funding success reflects NeuRA’s strong clinical performance and capacity for world-class research in disorders of the brain and nervous system.

Motor neurone disease theme leader Prof Matthew Kiernan says this is a fantastic result for NeuRA.

This funding means that several young researchers can now develop and pursue their research careers at NeuRA, bolstering our MND research program and advancing our understanding of this terrible disease”, Prof Kiernan said.

Our performance in this funding round also strengthens NeuRA’s major research focus into MND and its relationship with the most common dementia in people under 65 years of age – frontotemporal dementia”, he said.

Congratulations to the following NeuRA researchers:

  • Dr James Burrell will look into the impact of language dysfunction on quality fo life for people with MND.
  • Dr Rachael Tan will investigate the genetics of brain cells damaged by MND.
  • Dr Sharpley Hsieh will study how MND affects knowledge about the world and one’s ability to draw upon a past sense of self, which is likely to affect how patients make decisions for the future.

The funds will support researchers in their quests to understand the causes, provide better care, control the symptoms or find a cure for MND,” says Janet Nash, Executive Officer Research at MND Australia.
