Novel assessment of functional adaptation and motor plasticity following stroke
The aims of this project are to assess plasticity of the entire neural axis (central and peripheral motor pathways) and how they interact following a stroke. To establish the functional and physiological capacity of patients to improve their motor function (with rehabilitation) after stroke. To develop quantifiable biomarkers to objectively monitor stroke patients in future treatment trials.
Correlations will be sought between clinical, neurophysiological functional and routine imaging data. This study will be the first comprehensive investigation of the functional and physiological changes using novel threshold tracking physiological techniques during rehabilitation. The measures of functional recovery will provide important new information to suggest which patients will benefit most from rehabilitation. Results may offer insight into the physiological basis for the clinical heterogeneity of stroke patients as well as their differing responses to physical therapy. The knowledge gained from this study will make substantial contributions to our understanding of stroke and its consequences, providing new insights into the mechanisms of motor recovery after stroke.
